"He's got a lot of great ideas. Yeah. His latest idea is the esophagus". These two have so much fun together. You can just feel their creative energy dancing around them. Fabulous interview.
If you told Tim to speak without saying the word “like” he would, like, say a third of what he actually say now, like. Like that, you know? Like…if you liked this comment, you can, like, give it a like you know. Like…
He hated the entire process of publicity, by all accounts, so his coping mechanism was sarcasm and inside-jokes. He just wanted to make music and not deal with the commercial side of things.
I rather think as someone very similar to him it actually comes from a strong sense in your vision and craft and making sure everything is properly stated no misunderstanding of understanding in what the person is saying . That and I believe he’s introverted. An interesting lens on that introversion not from the basics but from Carl Jung’s theory on introversion/ extroversion Mark is classified as an INFJ which myself is as well. His demeanor just comes off as arrogant but he’s just reserved as well as meticulous on his thoughts. I think you should watch and read and listen more importantly about what Mark has to say to better understand him.
Excuse the pun but it is a shame that their last clip together, Mark hated. That was I Believe in You which was forced on him (with Pope directing) really to promote Spirit of Eden, not having any commercial content and releasing that one song (truncated) as a single. Mark had hoped for something pure and honest and that 'people could see the intent in his eyes' but it didn't work out that way. Personally I don't mind the clip at all. It is simple and honest and in line with his ethos but Mark hated it and regretted it. Such a shame. And then that was it. The 80's were over and soon Talk Talk were over. In a way, I wish he had gone down a slightly different path with the last albums but that was obviously not Mark, as is evident here, even in the heydey of song crafting. A true artist. Grateful that we had those first three albums, as compared to the final three (including Mark's solo album), a different approach entirely of course. I do feel a bit sorry for the interviewer, as you can see his horrified expression when he realised at the beginning what he was facing. Not his fault. It's the nature of the show. And they chose to come onto the show (or obligated via record company) but he held it together and did well in the end. A good insight into the music videos. RIP Mark. Loved your music since 1984.
Such a great band of the 80’s and Mark Hollis is the gem! He had so much energy and charisma! I can’t believe he’s gone! A hui hou, until we meet again.
I love this man to bit's. Brilliant man, Brilliant artist, very funny, very caring, very loving, so honest, deep, intelligent, a true genius, 🥰😪Greatly missed. 😭💔♥💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋
This interview is very Pythonesque .... with Michael Palin and Eric idle..very British... two talented down to earth guys who produced some of the most iconic British music of the 80’s
Talk Talk is one of few '80s bands whose music resonates with equal or greater relevancy now (in pandemic-traumatized 2021) than it did in the '80s. I like their pop stuff better than the slow bubbling, jazzy- melancholic artiness of their latter day albums but all their work is fascinating. Here is my top 5 list by Talk Talk: 5. Desire 4. Living In Another World 3. Give it Up 2. It's My Life 1. Life's What You Make It
Maybe Mark Hollis wasn't just joking when he said that actually he himself is all the animals we see in the video of 'It's My Life'? As being so concerned with the environment and nature, I think he saw things in a holistic, spiritual way: everything connected. The animals and Nature is 'his life' that 'never ends'. He and Pope sure loved each other; Mark's surprised, happy smile after Pope kissed him on the head at the end of the Dum Dum video, so sweet. And what fun they must have had together, both so sensitive, creative and full of whit!
@@jojaxy9528 Hallo Jo, To my regret I think it has been removed: 'Dum Dum Girl [take 1]', for I can't find it anymore, and I discovered that in my YT 'library' with Talk Talk video's now already 5 video's have gone. Such a shame! For 'Take 1' was to my opinion even nicer than 'Take 2'! At the end Tim Pope walks up to Mark, puts his hands around his head and kisses him on the hair. You can see Mark is very (happily) surprised, as shows his lovely smile, whilst saying something to Lee. A picture of that moment is shown in some fan made 'tributes', maybe you recognize it. A good wintertime to you too!
@@jojaxy9528 Hallo Jo, recently 'The Rover' has put the track 1 back on, great! Very grateful. I bet you'll enjoy it. You could also have a look at Pope's 'I want to be a Tree', there's a version in which Mark Hollis is one of the parcipants, though a very modest one!
You're right, I think Mark knew so much about what life is really, he knew about our holistic nature and our interconnection with all that lives and tried to explain it in simple words. He spent this life explaining to people how so simple things are actually. Pope and him seemed so glad to work together, two soul mates I guess. Speak your truth and bright your light. Life is as simple as that really.
Nothing will ever touch Mark. He was the apex. Still missing you.

Forever and ever Mark Hollis and Talk Talk 👑💖🦋✨️💔
Pope vc fala demais deixa Mark falar cara!
Has anyone seen the original video for Life's What You Make It?
What a fucking waste of time. Two guys who don't want to be interviewed.

seen a few interviews of Mark ....he comes across as very arrogant .
He hated the entire process of publicity, by all accounts, so his coping mechanism was sarcasm and inside-jokes. He just wanted to make music and not deal with the commercial side of things.

Oh tim. " I came up with a terrible idea for 'that thing' haha
Fair play to this interviewer, did his best and unlike some others, realised they were just messing about for most of it
The fact he chose family over touring; ergo money: speaks volumes about the man. Roger Hodgson did the same. 🥰
"A cross between Terry & June and Dallas with, a little bit of porn." I'd pay cash money to see that.
Comedy, musical and visual genius!

Simon was more suited to kids TV.
They're good lads. :-)
I don't do hero worship, but if I ever were to change my mind for one person, Mark Hollis would be the man for me

This would be 1984 if it's when It's My Life was first released.
"Life's What You Make It" had just been released as a single, which makes it early 1986.
Amazing Album 💙❤💔😪
Mark chose his family over music longevity . Now he has gone. Such a shame.
Thanks Tim and Mark for being bellends in this interview.

Tim Pope also did The Thes Infected movie...that film is intense...check it out if you can find it
I think Tim & Mark had a Pete & Dud thing going on here!
